Part 1: Foundations of Mental Health and Wellbeing

Mental health has become a leading health concern in North America, within both our personal lives and in the workplace. Although there is a growing recognition of the importance of protecting and bolstering our mental health, there is less information about the specific actionable steps to do so. Dr. Legg’s talk provides foundational information about what mental health is, what impacts our mental health and why it can change over time, as well as how to discuss mental health in a way that is appropriate and inclusive to those in our lives and within the workplace. Dr. Legg’s talk also provides actionable tools and concrete steps around what we can do to immediately start protecting and promoting our mental health. This talk provides audience members with the knowledge and tools to understand their own mental health, be sensitive to others’ mental health, increase their mental health and boost wellness intelligence. This foundational talk serves as a launchpad for attendees to engage with Dr. Legg’s Mental Health for Teams talk, and other more specific talks on wellness (e.g., stress management). Dr. Legg’s talk ensures that attendees are equipped with the basic knowledge that they need to begin maximizing their wellbeing.

Knowing the strategies that one can take to promote and bolster their mental health is an important part of resilient mental health. However, having a clear road map of how to implement these strategies is crucial to maintaining one’s mental health through day-to-day challenges. Dr. Legg’s Application of Skills talk focuses on teaching concrete skills and strategies that individuals can use to protect their mental health and promote personal resilience. Specifically, Dr. Legg’s talk introduces and provides examples of mindset and different ways of thinking that facilitates problem solving, acceptance, and resilience within individuals. Her talk also teaches concrete skills that individuals can use when faced with challenges and stressful situations to continue moving forward. Dr. Legg’s talk enhances talk attendee’s repertoire of personal skills that they can use to maintain their mental health, as well as effectively navigate forward in the face of difficult decisions, emotions, or situations. Her talk helps to extend attendees’ knowledge of what impacts their mental health by providing concrete tools to promote positive mental health within themselves. Attendees must participate in Dr. Legg’s Part 1: Foundations of Mental Health talk prior to receiving her Part 2: Application of Skills for Resilient Mental Health talk, to ensure all attendees have the foundational understanding of mental health required to apply skills to promote resilient mental health.

Part 2: Application of Skills for Resilient Mental Health

Poor mental health and wellbeing is cited to cost Canadian workplaces over $9 billion annually due to employee absenteeism, burnout, disability, and turn over. Many workplaces are grappling with how to support their employees’ mental health. Education about mental health in the workplace can help to proactively address this important issue as it helps to normalize mental health and bring awareness to workplace teams of how it can be impacted in team settings. Dr. Legg’s talk provides evidence-based information about what factors negatively and positively impact mental health in the workplace, concrete strategies that teams can implement to bolster mental health within their group and workplace, and how to identify mental health concerns within others or oneself at work. Dr. Legg’s talk also provides a guide on how to start conversations and address one’s mental health within a corporate setting. This talk provides team members with the knowledge and tools to understand how and why mental health can be impacted at work and in teams, spot changes in mental health among team members, and feel comfortable addressing these changes or challenges. This talk is key to helping ensure teams feel knowledgeable and equipped to bolster their mental health and proactively address it within their teams, to help assure team productivity and functioning. It is recommended that team members attend Dr. Legg’s Part 1: Foundations of Mental Health talk prior to receiving her Mental Health for Teams talk, to ensure all team members have the foundational understanding of mental health required to address it within their teams and care for themselves.

About Nicole

Dr. Nicole Legg (she/her) received both her Masters of Science and PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Victoria. Dr. Legg completed her Clinical Psychology Residency with the Fraser Health Authority at Royal Columbian Hospital, and currently provides psychological assessments and treatment in the community. She is a research-scientist, a therapist, and a professional speaker on mental health and wellness.

Dr. Legg has been providing talks on a range of mental health topics for more than 9 years to corporate employees and executives, government and not-for-profit organizations, schools, health clinics, and more. She has received exceptional feedback and reviews on both her engaging speaking style and the applicability of her talks. Dr. Legg combines her first hand experience in treating clients with mental health concerns, along with her rigorous training in evidence-based mental health interventions, to inform her comprehensive expertise in mental health and wellbeing. She has provided talks on mental health and engagement in high-risk behaviours to employees and executives at the Canadian Forces, British Columbia Legislative Assembly, Salesforce, Earls Head Office, District of North Vancouver, DailyHive, Hudson Pacific Properties, branches of the British Columbia Provincial Government, among many others. Dr. Legg has been featured on podcasts, radio programs, and in articles to share her expertise on various wellness topics. She has also been an invited guest speaker for a number of university psychology courses and awards ceremonies, and has been an invited guest panelist for organizations to discuss mental health, difficult life transitions, risky behaviours, and more.

Dr. Legg’s area of research focuses on understanding when and why people engage in high risk behaviours (e.g., substance use, disordered eating), as well as investigating the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Canadians’ mental health. She has given talks at various national and international conferences on the findings from her research and has received federal research fellowships and numerous awards in recognition of her research achievements. Dr. Legg’s work has been published in several peer-reviewed scientific journals in her field and she has co-authored textbook chapters for the Oxford and Cambridge University Press. Dr. Legg is an advocate for mental health awareness, but in her free time you can find her taking advantage of the many outdoor activities in Vancouver.
