Navigating Power Dynamics and Enhancing Communication in the Workplace

In today's corporate environment, navigating power dynamics and enhancing communication is crucial for fostering a psychologically safe workplace. Power dynamics, which include positional, relational, and expertise-based power, significantly influence employee morale, productivity, and openness, as well as organizational health.

Although power structures are necessary in corporate environments, effectively managing them is essential for creating a harmonious workplace. To address the challenges that can arise with navigating power dynamics, transparent and open communication from leadership is key. Techniques for constructive communication, which involve respectfully understanding employees’ needs and boundaries, alongside active listening, help us to uphold but navigate power dynamics in a healthy and productive way.

Nina’s talk, which is geared to executives, Human Resources personnel, and leaders, outlines the key building blocks to creating a top-down culture of respect and inclusion within the workplace. Nina’s talk is a guide to cultivating  a healthy consent culture in corporate settings where personal and professional boundaries are maintained, diversity of thought is encouraged, and inclusivity is prioritized within decision-making processes. Throughout her talk, Nina provides practical tools to implement these building blocks in the workplace, including conflict resolution strategies, mediation techniques, power-sharing practices, and tips to promote collaborative leadership and participatory decision-making, all of which help to neutralize stark power imbalances. Specifically, Nina covers how to address power imbalances within the workplace and create a healthy culture by creating safe spaces for dialogue through regular check-ins, anonymous feedback channels, and peer support groups; all of which ensure ongoing communication and support. Nina’s talk provides the building blocks for organizations to effectively navigate  power dynamics and enhance overall workplace communication. This talk is best suited for managers and leaders at all levels, and can be customized for employees to explore topics such as how to address sensitive issues with higher power individuals, create effective boundaries, and communicate and navigate conflict with peers.

After this talk, attendees will be able to…

  • Identify and address power differentials within their teams and departments.

  • Implement effective communication strategies to foster open and transparent dialogue.

  • Know how to take steps towards promoting a culture of respect, inclusion, and continuous improvement in their workplace.
